After getting an estimate of over $3500 to texture the plaster ceilings and paint them we had decided to do it our selves.  The results are great.  We decided to go for the completely smooth ceiling instead of trying to texture it.  My dad has been spending a lot of work on them and they are almost done.  The house looks completely different with smooth ceilings.  I know the acoustics will have to be addressed now that we do not have the popcorn ceiling but  it does help update the look of the house to have smooth ceilings.  It has set us back in the schedule but it is worth the effort as it really changes the look of the home.
